Smoked Salmon Dip

I moved back into my apartment last weekend after my summer in Charleston. I had a great summer and learned a lot, but it was tiring to live in college dorms again. Of course, moving is tiring as well. I thought about it, and I’ve moved 20 times in 5 years, in and out and back into dorms and sorority houses. So when I finally dragged myself to the grocery store, I meant to just get the basics, plus a few fun things to cook with. I happened to glance into the seafood case, and saw .75lb of smoked salmon for $7.00. Day. Made. Of course, I snapped it up. I also got all the ingredients for bagels and lox, intending to make the from scratch later. That still hasn’t happened, but I figured why not throw all of the ingredients together and eat it on crackers.

This rich, indulgent, smoky dip needs to be at your next party!

This dip is rich, indulgent, and easy. Just chop and mix. It makes enough for an appitizer for 4-6 people at a dinner party, but you could easily double it for larger gatherings. Since getting my own place, I have tried to host more get-togethers and dinners. They are fun and a great way to spend time with people who are important to you.  I think it would be great at your next gathering!

Try to get salmon that isn’t to salty, and certainly don’t add any more salt. I tend to find that the better quality salmon is less salty, but a law school budget means you have to be ok with some salt. Also, I like adding greek yogurt to lighten the texture and add just a bit of tang.

Lastly, I made the everything crackers pictured. I am not quite happy with the recipe, but I will keep tweaking it. Let me know if you want a recipe for it!


  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/4 Greek yogurt, unsweetened and plain
  • 3 ounces smoked salmon, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons red onion, minced very fine
  • 2 tablespoons capers (optional, but traditional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • Crackers to serve


  1. Allow the cream cheese to come to room temperature to make it easier to handle. Place in a large bowl with the Greek yogurt and mix. If you have a mixer, use the beater attachment to add air and lighten the dip. Mix for about 5 minutes. If you don’t have a mixer, mix at least until well-combined.
  2. Add the chopped salmon and onion. Chop the capers roughly, and then add the dill. Mix until combined.
  3. Garnish with a piece of dill, and serve with crackers!

This recipe keeps well over -night. If you have a particularly strong onion, you may want to keep it separate and add it at the last minute.
